The traditional material for this instrument is the bark twisted off, in
one piece, from a
straight, thin branch (for example willow).
It can be made for about two weeks in spring and it keeps for a day.
We make ours from plastic tubes wrapped in birch skin. It is a good
year-round substitute
that produces a sound very close to the original.
This is the only instrument we make using materials other than the
traditional.
